Artist Statement:
“The Portage Trail” captures the quiet intensity of a transitional space deep within Algonquin Park, offering a reflection on the expanded meaning of ‘place’ through the intersecting relationships of mind, body, and land. A portage is fundamentally an act of physical and mental endurance—a rugged threshold where the body bears the weight of moving between waters, stepping out of the rhythmic glide of the canoe and into the dense, uneven terrain of the forest. Drawing upon this moment in time and place, the painting meticulously renders the tactile reality of the environment: the damp, moss-draped trunks, the scattered stones of the creek bed, and the piercing clarity of the late afternoon sun. This piece examines how our connection to a location is shaped and challenged through direct, strenuous interaction with the earth. Informed by backcountry wilderness travel, the painting invites the viewer to feel the meditative attention that arises when the mind must synchronize entirely with the immediate demands of the natural world, transforming a momentary, “out of place” transition into a profound state of presence.
Artist Biography:
The quiet symphony of water, land and sky is my inspiration. As a lifelong resident of Ontario, I am fortunate to have grown up in a family that thrived in the outdoors. I was born in 1969, into a nature loving family whose weekends were spent exploring the outer reaches of Ontario’s natural places. We hiked, paddled, explored, and found great solace in the beauty of our wilderness, specifically Algonquin Park. It is here, that we forged new friendships, meeting like-minded people from around the world, or right next door. For 30 years, I had found success as an Architectural Commercial Artist. When I wasn’t working long hours and meeting tight deadlines, I turned to nature to quiet my mind and recharge my soul. Paddling, Fishing, Cycling and Hiking are the mainstays of my leisure time. Today I call Grimsby, Ontario home, but my soul resides further north, where the roads end and the waterways begin. Much like Tom Thomson’s path, my heart and body told me to step away from the unyielding stress of commercial work and allow my love for nature to guide a new beginning in Fine Art. With renewed energy and passion, I taught myself to paint in Oils. I am drawn to challenging scenes of luminescence, intricate reflections or atmospheres that stir the soul. Each painting is as unique as the canoe trip that inspired it. Through my work, you can join me on this journey of discovery into the calm and tranquil backcountry with paddle, pack and paintbrush in hand.
