Artist Statement:
In the Harbour View series, Collingwood Harbour is seen from above in the off-season. Jetties
extend into deep, dark water, forming sharp lines and measured gaps where boats have yet to return.
The absence of vessels shifts the emphasis toward what remains. Berths, typically understood through use, are defined instead by their negative space; by the outlines of where something should be. The composition moves between documentation and abstraction, where function gives way to form.
In the stillness, a single seagull occupies the scene. Its presence does not restore function, but instead emphasizes the absence around it. What should be active is quiet; what remains feels out of place.
“Out of place” emerges not through what has been added, but through what has been removed.
Artist Biography:
Matt Low is a Canadian photographer whose work is often centered on the shorelines of Georgian Bay and Bruce County, distilling natural environments into compositions of texture, form, and edge. His work is influenced by the impact of seasonal patterns on familiar environments and institutions – shifting the mundane into something worth lingering over. Beneath these seasonal rhythms exists an enduring quality of renewal and the promise of return. At the core of his practice is a minimalist philosophy: to reduce distraction and allow form, texture, and relationship to carry meaning. People often appear in his images not as subjects in the traditional sense, but as elements within a larger composition—anchors that provide scale.
The resulting images are meant to feel quiet, but powerful. Low’s hope is that the work encourages reflection—an invitation to slow down and be present.
