Raised amid the lakes, granite formations, and forests of the Canadian Shield, I developed a lifelong sensitivity to structure, form, and the ways landscape shapes our sense of place. The rugged terrain and built structures of rural Ontario continue to influence how I see and interpret the world around me. My quilted work in the Shift series is inspired by an abandoned rural building that I have photographed repeatedly over more than a decade. Rather than depicting a single moment, this piece is an abstraction drawn from years of observation, combining visual impressions gathered over time. Through sustained attention, I have witnessed the gradual transformation of a structure as it falls out of place and slowly returns to the earth. As the building deteriorates, unexpected angles, lines, shapes, and shadows emerge. Hard edges soften as nature reclaims what was once built to resist it. What began as a functional structure becomes something more ambiguous—a meeting point between memory, imagination, and landscape. The work explores the shifting nature of place and how our relationship to it changes through time and distance. A building that once provided shelter and a sense of belonging can persist long after its physical purpose has disappeared. In this way, place becomes more than a location; it is something carried in memory, shaped by attention, and continually reinterpreted. Through abstraction, I invite viewers to consider what remains when a place begins to vanish. Does a home endure after the structure falls apart? Does place reside in the land, the building, the memories attached to it, or somewhere in between? What happens when those who carried the memories of place are no longer here? The work offers space for reflection on impermanence, belonging, and the evolving connections between people, memory, and place.
