Artist Statement:
I was drawn to the incredible detail in a tiny pinecone. From something so small and delicate, it carries the potential to become a giant towering pine tree. This highly detailed piece celebrates resilience, growth and the unstoppable power of nature. Painted in oil on a raw wood background, I intentionally left the natural surface exposed to include another element of nature that connects us to our natural world.
My process begins with an idea, story, memory or a moment of inspiration. From there, I seek out the subject I have in mind, whether a rotary phone, teacup, pinecone or maple leaf. I photograph each subject myself and when needed, refine the images digitally to achieve the composition, colour saturation, or other visual adjustments I envision. Once resolved, I sketch the image onto canvas. Using acrylic and oil paints, I build each piece slowly, layering vibrant colour with careful attention to detail, texture, and depth. What makes my work unique is its ability to evoke nostalgia through realistic portrayals of vintage objects and elements from nature. It is a balance of technical skill, emotionally resonant subject matter and the personal connection each piece fosters with viewers.
Artist Biography:
Erin Wheatley began painting in 2020 as a way to reconnect with a dream long set aside and find calm in an uncertain world. Reflecting on her own challenging childhood, she was drawn to objects that symbolized joy, comfort, and freedom. Often these comforting memories took place in our natural world. She spent summers at a family cottage or camping in parks throughout Ontario. These places provided peace, safety, calm and and a childhood sense of adventure. She creates realistic acrylic and oil paintings of natural forms and everyday items that carry nostalgia and emotional meaning. Through vibrant colour and detail, her work invites viewers to pause and reconnect with their own memories. She strives to bring memories to life in a way that feels both personal and universal. Working from her home studio in Muskoka, Ontario, Erin draws inspiration from the region’s natural beauty and quiet charm. She is a member of the Society of Canadian Artists, Artist Network and Muskoka Arts & Crafts.
