Artist Statement:
I often question what makes us belong. How our identity is shaped over time. One of the many components seems to be where we are from, our place of birth. There is so much weight and importance to this random fact when it really is something that is out of our control, maybe even out of the control of our mothers and fathers. These invisible lines dictating land and country and culture are held tighter than our own lives. History has made our current divisions, but change is possible, change will come. No matter how much we fight it. Regardless of how hard we stand on this land; it will never belong to anyone forever. We never had ownership to begin with. We cannot own land; we do not own anything. How can we if we ourselves are temporary.
Artist Biography:
Born in Northern Ontario, attending high school in North Bay Ontario and then moving to Toronto with a few years stint in Vancouver, BC, Tiffany Monk has shown her work in Texas, Australia, Vancouver and Toronto. Over the years she has worked with acrylic paint on paper, canvas and wood panel, sculpture, rug hooking, illustration and beading. Most of her ideas are informed by her experiences working in pathology or by the patterns found in nature. With these influences she creates works often dealing with crossing over from one space to another and the changing from one state to the next. After spending many years in Toronto, she made the move to the Muskoka area where she continues to work in the medical field and spends time in her studio.
