Artist Biography
Michael Compeau was born in 1961 and grew up in Kingston, Ontario. A city dripping with history and surrounded by a raw Canadian shield beauty. Its forests, waters and islands have had an immeasurable impact upon all forms and genres of his artistic output.If he had to pick a single artist who has influenced him the most it would be the British land artist Richard Long. This selection may seem in-congruent with his body of work, but for Long the action of walking was the true work of art. The material use that followed was merely an attempt to replicate the essence, the spirituality, the sense of awe of that experience.
After graduating in 1984 with a degree in Landscape Architecture he was encouraged to follow the example of several professors to pursue a career in education. He received degrees from both the University of Western Ontario and York University before embarking on a 30 year career in art education.
A professional artist since 1996, his multi-award winning work can be found in numerous corporate and private collections world wide.
