My paintings begin long before they reach the canvas, starting as an idea that I sit with and plan out in my head - mentally adjusting colour and composition. The ideas that stick with me for a while are the ones that finally make it to canvas - they are the ones that linger. My subject matter has varied a lot over the years and the changing landscape around me has continued to influence me in different ways. Spending the past few years living in Muskoka has led me towards wildlife, and especially birds.
As a painter, I work reductively in washes of oil paint. It is a process that I become intricately a part of as I complete each painting in one sitting. By working reductively, I find myself more aware and sensitive to the changes that are at play on the canvas - more watchful of the result and more a part of the process. As much as possible, I like to leave my paintings open to interpretation - through negative space, areas of colour, simple titles. I know what they mean to me, but I like to leave a bit of the story untold.
