June 8th to June 22nd 2026
If you have ever spent time with a David Lidbetter Original, whether in our galleries, or one you purchased for your home, you know you are in the presence of something truly special. We are delighted to host a special featured exhibition this coming June; ‘Water Media on Paper – Landscape & Memory’. We welcome you to come and experience this thoughtful body of work, with intention and curiosity.
Artist Statement:
My work explores the shifting boundary between observation and abstraction in the landscape. Rather than depicting a specific location, these paintings emerge from remembered places—fields, bogs, tree lines, and quiet edges of land where the horizon feels both open and restrained. I am drawn to these spaces because they carry a sense of stillness and solitude, where subtle changes in light, season, and atmosphere reshape the landscape in quiet but profound ways.
Working in layered paint, I build surfaces slowly, allowing textures, stains, and drips to accumulate. These marks often echo natural processes—erosion, thaw, runoff, and the slow movement of water across land. The surface becomes a record of time as much as an image of place. I am interested in how a few structural elements—a horizon line, a dark mass of trees, a break in the ground—can suggest an entire environment while leaving room for ambiguity.
The resulting compositions sit somewhere between representation and abstraction. Fragments of recognizable landscape remain, but they are reduced to essential forms and relationships of colour, space, and texture. I want the paintings to feel familiar but not fixed, allowing viewers to project their own experiences of landscape into the work.
Ultimately, these paintings are about quiet observation—about the subtle drama found in ordinary terrain and the emotional resonance that emerges when land, memory, and atmosphere converge. – David Lidbetter
