Join us for the opening reception of Polar Shift, a compelling solo exhibition by Canadian photographer and artist Rob Stimpson, on view at Coles Art Market from January 24 to February 7.
Spanning more than a dozen years of exploration in the Arctic and Antarctic, Polar Shift presents large-format photographs that capture the majesty, emotion, and vulnerability of the Earth’s polar regions. From towering icebound mountains to vast, luminous glaciers, Stimpson’s work offers an immersive window into some of the most remote and fragile landscapes on the planet.
Originally from Hudson, Quebec, Rob Stimpson is an internationally published, award-winning photographer with a lifelong connection to wilderness and place. He began his career as a photographer’s assistant in Basel, Switzerland, before going on to photograph for Ontario Tourism, Parks Canada, Ontario Parks, and numerous organizations supporting northern and wilderness tourism. Over the past 15+ years, his work has taken him deep into remote regions including Antarctica, the Arctic, Greenland, and the Northwest Territories.
In 2012, Stimpson was elected to the Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s College of Fellows, and in 2016 he was profiled by The Globe and Mail and Lexus alongside nine other Canadian artists. He is a co-author of An Artist’s and Photographer’s Guide to Wild Ontario, a contributor to several published books, and a passionate educator who taught photography at Fleming College for 15 years before moving to Loyalist College. In 2023, he was selected and profiled by Destination Canada among 13 Canadians. He continues to write for northern tourism organizations and maintains his photographic gallery in Lake of Bays.
The exhibition serves as both a visual record and a quiet call to reflect on climate change and the disappearing ecosystems of the polar world. Following a recent exhibition at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto, Polar Shift now comes to Coles Art Market, offering viewers the opportunity to experience this body of work in an intimate gallery setting.
